Track Of The Day :: PWR BTTM - Ugly Cherries

Words: Linn Branson

After we'd had a silly little giggle - "are they really called Power Bottom?!" - this new single 'Ugly Cherries' from the New York duo, which came out yesterday (via Father/Daughter Records) was a winner from the start.

Ben Hopkins (vocals/guitar/bass) and Oliver Bruce (vocals/drums) might be another in the garage punk drum 'n' bass department, but believe me, these two cats are nothing at all like Royal Blood, Drenge, Slaves et. al. PWR BTTM is a queer punk band formed at Bard College where Bruce and Hopkins bonded over a mutual interest in bringing elements of performance and drag artistry into DIY culture. After recording demo EP 'Cinderella Beauty Shop', released last year, and the 'Republican National Convention' split EP with Jawbreaker Reunion, they have developed to this debut full-length stage which documents the duo's experiences with queerness, gender, and adulthood over the course of a year of living in upstate New York.

The title track from their full-length (out on September 18 as a dual Miscreant Records-Father/Daughter Records release) opens on a howling riff that moves into a dip-dive of heavy drum rhythm, catchy vocal and instantly pleasing melody sets in that makes the two minutes right to its drone-out end, one that is as engaging as it is gritty and striking.
