Track Of The Day :: Small Black - Boys Life

Words: Ellie Ward

The first single 'Boys Life' from Small Black's third upcoming album (and first since 2013), is about “putting ourselves in the shoes of our parents and seeing our similarities across our different eras,” says frontman and writer Josh Kolenik.

The song, based around a rediscovered early Small Black demo track, is a lush five-minute work of shining synth-pop, where glistening keyboard notes play around Kolenik’s tenor vocal.

The album - “about loss, the specific loss of precious people in our lives, but also the loss of memories and the difficult fight to preserve them” - was written and recorded at the Brooklyn home studio of the band over a 12 month period and was mixed by Nicolas Vernhes (The War on Drugs, Deerhunter).

'Best Blues' is out on October 16 via Jagjaguwar.
