Track Of The Day :: Sunbathers - Intimacy

Words: Linn Branson

The first thing you are struck by with Baltimore indietronica band Sunbathers is the vocal. You are not too many seconds into 'Intimacy', the lead track from their debut EP, when you start to wish there was a video, just for a sight of Sean Lynott's tremulous lips that must surely accompany his pitch-peaking vocal and wobble-mode tonsils: both need to be heard to be believed.

Released on November 10, the five-track self-titled record, produced by Donny Ingram at Baltimore's Dreamcatcher Studio, marks a strong start for the quintet who split their time between Washington D.C. and Baltimore.

'Intimacy' is without doubt a standout, its slow groove gradually opening out on jangle beats, and tinkling synths - and some interesting instrumentation in the last minute - as Lynott’s voice draws you in and grabs the attention. Sunbathers create a sound here that we hear the like of fairly often from young British indie outfits, but not so much from across the pond. Early days one suspects right now for Sunbathers, but a band heading promisingly in the right direction.

Check out 'Intimacy' below, and hear more of the EP via Bandcamp.

Sunbathers play an EP release show at Velvet Lounge, Washington D.C. on December 12.
